Increase in Oklahoma Drunk Driving Fatalities Over the Past Decade

03.02.2010 08:00
Despite significant improvement in urban areas, statewide data for Oklahoma compiled by McIntyre Law, P.C. reveals a dramatic increase in alcohol-related fatalities.

Oklahoma City, OK February 2, 2010 -- McIntyre Law P.C., an Oklahoma injury law firm, has compiled data that reveals a drastic increase in the number of alcohol-related and DUI fatalities in Oklahoma between 2004 and 2008. While the number of alcohol-related crashes remained relatively constant over the five-year period, the total number of fatalities increased sharply in 2007-2008. Tulsa and Oklahoma counties experience the highest number of fatalities from 2004-2008, but drastically lowered annual fatalities by 2008.

Oklahoma needs to prioritize prevention and implement stronger DUI programs.
McIntyre Law compiled the report using statistics from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office (OHSO), the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Utilizing detailed graphs and maps, the report provides a county-by-county breakdown of alcohol-related Oklahoma car accidents that reveals both long- and short-term trends.

Some of the report's key findings:

  • The percentage of Oklahoma auto fatalities considered alcohol-related jumped from 24.07% in 2004 to 35.42% in 2008.
  • 69.8% of crashes resulting in a fatality occurred in rural areas.
  • Oklahoma (81) and Tulsa (68) counties had the highest number of fatalities over the five-year period.
  • Tillman, Tulsa, and Oklahoma counties had the lowest fatality rate, each with less than 13 deaths per 100,000 residents.
  • Atoka County experienced a 900% increase in alcohol-related fatalities. The county had 1 fatality in 2004 but experience 10 in 2008.

While many of Oklahoma's 77 counties experienced a decline, no increase, or minor increase in alcohol-related fatalities between 2004-2008, the overall trend points toward a growing number of alcohol-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities. McIntyre Law hopes the report's statistics will contribute to an increased awareness of the consequences of drunk driving.

“Our firm has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects that drunk driving causes on the victims and their families.” Noble McIntyre said, “As an Oklahoma statewide MADD sponsor, McIntyre Law understands the need for increased drunk driving awareness. Oklahoma needs to prioritize prevention and implement stronger DUI programs. Too many families have buried loved ones - the time to act is now!"

McIntyre Law, P.C. serves Oklahomans who have suffered personal injuries as a result of the negligence of another. For more information on Oklahoma car accidents and alcohol-related fatalities of the past decade, visit: http://www.oklahoma-law.com/
