LaunchPoint Technologies Announces New High Efficiency, High Power Density, Halbach Array Electric Motor

LaunchPoint Technologies, Inc. has completed optimization and first prototyping for a high efficiency, high energy density, Halbach range electric motor.

With a complete weight of just 1.4 lbs, this electrical motor produces 7 horsepower at 8400 rpm with 95 percent efficiency. At 5 horsepower per pound, this electric motor has a higher energy density compared to any other electrical motor available on the market. The brushless, axial flux permanent magnet design is tolerant of centrifugal and temperature effects, along with the ironless rotor and stator eliminate iron hysteresis losses and eddy current.

Although the present design is just 6 inches in diameter and less than 1 inch thick, this high power density electric motor design could be scaled and adapted for larger electric vehicle motor software such as: electrically-powered and hybrid UAVs; electrically-propelled unmanned aircraft and underwater vehicles; wheel motors for cars and bikes; and wheel motors for scooters, bikes, and other lightweight transportation devices.

Designed and manufactured by LaunchPoint Senior Systems Engineer, Geoff Long, the newest high efficiency electric motor will make it possible for programs not previously possible. With the move to vehicles of all types, LaunchPoint’s engine technology is timely. “Highly lightweight and efficient electric motors are needed now more than ever, and that’s exactly what LaunchPoint’s technology produces,” notes Long. “LaunchPoint’s electrical motor technologies squeezes more power from a more compact package and at a greater efficiency than any other motor available on the market.

LaunchPoint received initial development financing through a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DARPA is interested in utilizing the engine in electrically-propelled Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Higher energy density and the light weight supplied by this new electrical motor design enable longer ranges a protracted battery life, and payloads.Ongoing development funding is being sought from NASA and the Department of Defense in addition to private investors.
